The West Capitol Terrace
Parking lots west of the State Capitol were removed during the summer of 2006 to make way for a people's park - the West Capitol Terrace - with pedestrian paths, gathering spaces, benches, a fountain, and native trees and flowers. Phase I of the project is scheduled to be completed by June 2007, in time for the Hy-Vee Triathlon being hosted by Des Moines. Phases II and III - which include the fountain and outlying trees, terracing and additional plants - are hoped to be completed in 2009-2010, pending appropriation of anticipated funding.
Arbor Day Tree Planting - Hundreds of Iowa students, teachers and individuals gathered on April 27, 2007, to celebrate Arbor Day by planting trees on the West Capitol Terrace, creating a legacy for future generations to enjoy.
