Pioneer Plow

36.jpg (17369 bytes)
This antique walking plow was a gift of the Roy Lackender family of rural Iowa City and was presented to the state by the Iowa Plowing Association. Lackender used it years ago to plow a small acreage of prairie sod on his Iowa farm.

The chrome-plated, 16-inch wooden moldboard plow is estimated to be nearly 100 years old. Use of moldboard blades was a common way to plow prairie sod in Iowa’s early years. It's use was discontinued when the relationship to soil erosion was recognized. The plow was dedicated in 1979.
