35.jpg(10874 bytes)   The black, stainless steel structure in front of the Wallace building is the creation of Ronald Bladen of New York City. Bladen, a noted minimalist, was chosen to design a monument complementing the new state agricultural building. Funding for the $60,000 project came from the National Endowment for the Arts and the state, under the same legislation that financed Utterback's "Five Stones--One Tree."

Bladen worked for three years on the 17,000-pound, 24-foot-high and 20-foot-wide sculpture. He described its relationship to agriculture as philosophical rather than direct; a simple statement of the basic and solid importance of agriculture to Iowans and all peoples throughout the world.
